Happy birthday Maelstrom!
This five-minute long dark ride/viking ship voyage first launched on July 5, 1988. For the past 24 years, guests have been braving angry trolls, polar bears and the rugged North Sea during their voyage into Norwegian history.
Here’s a look at Willard Scott hosting the opening of the Norway Pavilion/Maelstrom. (Note: Special unexpected bonus – awesome 80s haircuts and music by The Cure.)
Let’s celebrate by taking a vicarious ridethrough of Norway’s Maelstrom:
Wait, don’t run through the theater after you survived the voyage. Have a seat and enjoy “The Spirit of Norway.”
Shall we wander around the Norway pavilion a bit?
I’d like to take a tour of the Stave Church:
Spellmanns Gledje is starting – so grab a Carlsberg, pull up a curb and check out some traditional Norwegian music:
I’ve always been somewhat proud of myself for spotting a Hidden Mickey in the mural across from the queue, but I just learned of a second one that I’ve never seen before.
I was standing in line, awaiting my chance to not be the first to pass this way (nor shall I be the last,) when I noticed a viking sporting a pair of Mickey ears. However, I was just notified that there is a second Hidden Mickey in the mural. Do you know where it is?

Bill, I know there’s one in the boat(maybe learned that from one of your books). What’s the 2nd one? Oh, and you may already know this, but at the restuarant T-REX(I found the food to be mediocre and overpriced-but the kids liked it) @ Downtown Disney there’s a hidden mickey between one of the big octopuses’ tentacles. Just so you know.
On our honeymoon at Disney World the cast members at maelstrom noticed the just married buttons and gave us a boat all to ourselves. We sat in the front row and had a private ride through the attraction. It was fantastic
My uncle loves Maelstrom. The first time he ever rode it, he panicked for a minute because he really thought the boat was going over the falls. And my uncle is fearless.
