The long whispered about DVC property at the Grand Floridian isn’t such a secret anymore.
WESH 2 is reporting that “Disney is about to begin expansion project at its priciest resort. As WESH.com reported in march, a permit application shows the proposed addition of a large building to the south of the existing resort buildings, wedged to the north of the wedding pavilion. The plans call for demolishing the resort’s existing tennis court, adding a parking lot and what appears to be an entrance for the building all its own.
The spa at the Grand Floridian is reportedly shutting down for 18 months starting Sept. 19.
The shoreline of the Seven Seas Lagoon is also going to be changed to accommodate the new building, according to filed plans from Walt Disney Imagineering. The change would allow for more property with a view of the water.
“Disney has not provided any official details about the project, but many Disney fans have speculated the project may be a new timeshare property for the company’s Disney Vacation Club arm.”
- What do you think?
- Would you buy DVC there?
- What about current DVC members? Are you attracted to the possibility of a DVC resort at GF?
- Will we see tiered DVC?
- Any thoughts on point cost for what’s seen as Disney’s most fancy-pants resort?
We own at Saratoga Springs – which I like, but I think I would’ve preferred something on the monorail line. Let’s face it though, the cost per-point back when we bought in 2005 is less than it will be for the GF property when it goes on sale.

Hopefully the new DVC resort means Disney will do a point discount because we are in desperate need of more points! Depending on how many points it is, I would love to stay here. I’ve always thought it was cool, even though very fancy. We stayed at Bay Lake Tower for a night last year and being on the monorail made everything a lot easier. Not to mention the beautiful view of Cinderella Castle and Tomorrowland.
I was hoping to do a spa day at the GF during our upcoming January trip but I guess we’ll have to stick to SS instead… Sounds exciting though!
Already bought my second DVC contract at BLT, so I don’t see myself buying GF points. Would be happy to book there at 7-months if possible. I don’t see how they’d build a very big DVC building in the spot without messing up the appearance of the resort (in other words, putting a 10+ story building at GF would be a crime!) As for Tiered DVC – I wonder if they’d aim for an Aulani style of ownership where you get preferred use of your points on a specific time window.
My monorail experience at BLT was less than great. The more rooms they cram around the loop, the more crowded those monorails get. At BLT I left walking for MK while my party took the monorail. I ended up waiting close to 30 minutes for them to catch up. Admittedly, that was around 7pm on a MNSSHP night.
@ Charles – When BLT started coming out of the ground, all of us cast members thought, “They are ruining the Comtemporary!” Then I saw the renderings and blueprints when I had to do some work on it and thought, “Hmmm, this doesn’t look so bad.” Now that it is complete, it looks as if it has belonged and been there from the beginning. I anticipate the same for this one too. It will certainly compliment the GF in style and feel.
Lesson – I usually go with what the Imagineers throw at me, they get it right most of the time… but what would I know?
