The Disney Wonder is canceling stops in the Mexican Pacific port of Mazatlan and others are considering it due to crime against tourists.
According to an Associated Press report, the Wonder has dropped calls to Mazatlan from its seven-night Mexican Riviera tour and replaced them with an additional stop in Cabo San Lucas on the Baja California peninsula.
Mazatlan, for its part, says its a safe port-of-call. Port Director Alfonso Gil Diaz as saying the incidents causing concern were minor, such as one passenger whose necklace was snatched.
My knowledge of Mexican geography might be a bit rusty, but when thousands of people are being killed in that particular region in an ongoing drug war and Disney says it might be better to skip that stop, I’m going to listen. Call me paranoid, but piles of decapitated victims tend to make me a little shakey.
This comes on the heels of the Tunisian uprising. The Disney Magic stops in Carthage, which is in Tunisia, so pretty much everyone is keeping a very close eye on developments there.
FTA:
“On the 10- and 11-night excursions, Tunisia is the second stop. After departing Barcelona, Spain, the Magic visits Malta, Tunisia, makes three port calls to Italy, and one each to Corsica and southern France before returning the Barcelona. (The Magic does not stop in Tunisia during its seven-night sailings.)
Tunisia currently is in the throes of major political upheaval. Stories datelined out of Tunis in the past few weeks report rock-throwing protesters, riots, tear gas, curfews and, sad to say, dozens of deaths.”
The Tunisian-style protests are spreading. It will be interesting to see where it goes and how it affects commerce.
